The largest populations of patients are those with congestive heart failure or acute coronary syndrome diagnosis. Pre-and post cardiac cath interventions are managed on this unit. Nursing staff are experienced with a variety of invasive devices, including arterial lines and pacemakers. In addition, all nurses rotate through the ICCU, where they are precepted to manage vasoactive drips.

CICU nurses are precepted to successfully manage intubated and nonintubated patients with multiple vasoactive drips, pulmonary artery catheters, intra-aortic balloon pumps, transcutaneous and tranvenous pacemakers and continuous renal replacement therapy. The nursing staff is in this unit are part of the hospital wide code response team.
